UK Search Engine Marketing Benchmark Report 2010
2010 UK Search Engine Marketing Benchmark Survey
We have had a fantastic response to the survey this year and would like to thank those who participated for taking the time to contribute to the SEM Benchmark Report 2010.
The report was launched at an exclusive event at The Groucho Club on Thursday 3rd June 2010, where Guava's Martin Dinham and Econsultancy's Linus Gregoriadis presented the findings.
The report is relevant for all UK digital marketers and covers paid search, search engine optimisation and social media marketing. If you did not take part in the SEM survey, you are still eligible to receive a copy of the full SEM Benchmark Report 2010.
The UK Search Engine Marketing Benchmark Report 2010, carried out by Econsultancy in association with digital marketing agency Guava, contains a comprehensive year on year analysis of the UK Search environment.
The 73-page report, covering both Search Engine Optimisation, Paid Search and Social Media is based on an online survey of nearly 600 respondents in February and March 2010.

- Type of Search Activity and Search Services
- Search Budget
- Objectives and Effectiveness

Highlights include:
- The vast majority of companies (83%) carrying out search engine marketing pay to advertise on Google, although this figure has dropped 2% since last year.
- Use of Yahoo has declined more sharply, from 44% last year (and 49% in 2008) to 36% this year.
- The vast majority of companies (81%) now market themselves on Twitter, making this the most widely used social media website for marketing and putting it slightly ahead of Facebook (78%). The proportion of companies who say they use Twitter for marketing has increased massively from 49% last year, and just 3% in 2008.
- Less than half of companies (45%) carrying out paid search marketing are using a third party bid management technology for their PPC activity.
- Some of the most important findings are also broken down by sector, enabling useful benchmarking by industry (for financial services, publishing, retail and travel).
